Shirin and Naveen: In My Life
Writing love songs...it's typically me strolling through memory lane...reflecting on the lessons I've learned. The process of writing a love song for another person is one step away from writing your own content. It some ways, it's so cool because I become this objective listener who has the opportunity to listen to the storyteller's words and then morph it into the parameters of a song.
The first song I wrote based on this process was for my friend Shirin and her husband, Naveen. She had me come over to her home, made me a warm cup of chai, and as her beautiful boys were playing, she proceeded to tell me her love story that spanned so many borders all the way from India to Nashville and from Austin to Seattle. And while she told me this story, I soon got the sense that what she was telling me should come through in a slow, acoustic style with a bit of southern flavor, but also a bit of Indian scales mixed in too. Something nostalgic was seeping through the story line.
I was so honored when Shirin asked me to write for her just a few months back. She proceeded to give this song to Naveen for their anniversary a couple of weeks ago. They were headed on a camping trip Memorial Day weekend and she played it for him as a surprise.
Here is 'In My Life.' Love to you both!

And here is what Shirin said after she surprised Naveen with the song:
"...On a camping trip with our boys over our anniversary weekend, I told Naveen I had recently found some music I thought he'd enjoy, and smilingly slipped a CD into the CD player in the car. Watching his reaction to the words and how touched he was by this anniversary gift and how he had to listen to the song again and again was priceless.
But the best gift that Naveen and I both unexpectedly got was how much our little one, 3 yr old Arnav loved the song and asked for it to be played repeatedly and soon had all the words memorized.
A few days back, we were driving somewhere and Arnav asked for the 'Nashville song' again. As the song started playing and he started humming along, we got another lovely surprise to hear our 7 yr old Aadit singing as well; apparently he knew all the words too!
Listening to our boys singing our song was an indescribable feeling and we both felt so grateful and blessed.
Thank you so, so much Sheeba for this amazing gift!"
