Same Love by Macklemore
The Supreme Court decided to repeal DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), or at least a few provisions of it. I was watching the news with my parents and you know what? I cried. I cried out of joy. I was so happy for all my friends who had to struggle because they couldn't legally love who they wanted to love. The law dates back to 1996 and it prevented same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits.
When I think about human rights, I think about rights every human being deserves, regardless of what race, religion, gender, class, or sexual orientation they come from. I think about how far we have come in this country and I think about the work we still have to do around equity and justice for all (the words still have power over 200 years later).
And while we have witnessed some pretty atrocious events throughout history, there are these moments when love overwhelms the world because courageous people learn to stand up.
Macklemore is a hip-hop artist from Seattle. I'm not a Seattle native, but I feel proud when I hear him! There's this authenticity and truth to his lyrics. I appreciate him writing 'Same Love' and being bold enough to share it within the hip-hop community and with the world. He speaks about the need to speak out against injustices he sees. Sound familiar? MLK Jr had those same sentiments years ago, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
So here's to love overwhelming us...here's to love for all;)
