Redford by Surfjan Stevens from The Roots album, Undun

History proceeds in ebbs and flows. July 13th was a lower point of that flow when justice seemed to have been forgotten. So today, we collectively bow our heads down for the loss, for Trayvon Martin, and for laws such as ‘Stand Your Ground’ that seem to allow for hate to seep through so easily.

I am not a legal analyst, but I absolutely know in my heart when decisions and actions are fair and just. The decision to acquit Trayvon’s perpetrator was not just. And rather than repeat his name or reflect on how far we have in rectifying race relations in America (which is totally legitimate and necessary), I write today out of love for Trayvon’s parents, his family, his community, and our society.

I hope that the outcome of this case results in a unified voice that speaks up and creates change. I already see some amazing work happening through the NAACP centered on courage, belief, and love.

Today’s love song is pensive and somber, yet hopeful.

I guess that’s where my heart is right now:

I love this album, Undun. Ironically, it tells the story of a young man whose life ended too quickly.

Bless your spirit, Trayvon.
