Oh Darling by San Fermin
Blended harmonies are so damn beautiful, aren't they? I went to a show last night, Lake Street Dive, and the group was on point. There was the female singer and then the trumpet/guitar player added his vocals as did the bass player and the drummer. That's right, the guitar player was a trumpeter also. So talented. I woke up this morning checking out more of their work, and then on a deeper search, I fell into this group: San Fermin.
Their vocals are so incredibly gorgeous. The group was started by Ellis Ludwig-Leone, a native from Brooklyn. Full on band with a few vocals. I read that they were described as an orchestral folk- pop band. Why is that so funny to me? Is it because we have the freedom to blend genres more and more? Um, yeah, I'm part of a jazz, hip-hop, country rock band. No, I'm really not! But I feel like that's where music is going. The world is blending and so are all the cultural influences. I know it's been done in the past, it just seems like even more, we're getting bolder about how to do it. Which makes me wonder...in 30-40 years, what's going to be the newest genre? More holograms at concerts? ;)
I also saw this album, San Fermin, being described as "surprising, moving, and evocative." I love that, something so unexpected. I felt it deeply when I heard "Oh Darling." I kept hitting the replay button.
So, here's to this ballad, almost haunting song, that lifts at the same time...and to my love of the surprising and moving. It's the first song in this tiny desk concert:
