Turn to Stone by Ingrid Michaelson

I'm on an Ingrid Michaelson kick. I saw her perform at the Paramount Theater this past week and I was impressed on so many levels: her moving voice, her quirky nature, her thoughtful lyrics, and her bright red piano!

There were other things that spoke to me too, like the way she interacted with her audience; she was warm and loving. And that set this tone for the show where there was a connection. I think that's what we're looking for on a simple level, a connection with others. And when it can happen with thousands of people who share a moment, or share music together, it gets us to that closer to humanity. Big leap here, right? But I believe it. There's something about collective experiences that are powerful for me.

Today, I'm featuring her song, Turn to Stone.

"Let's take a better look
beyond a story book
And learn our souls are all we own
before we turn to stone"

That first verse says so much about life and one of the things we are meant to do on this Earth. If we can learn that our souls are all we own, what would we do to cultivate this part of us? What would we stop worrying about? What would we focus more on? How would we grow ourselves in the most profound ways possible? And all before we turn to stone?

And what if we all had "hearts too big to fit our beds"?

Turn to Stone includes 4 verses and yet it raises some of the biggest questions related to life. We don't need a philosophy book...sometimes the wisdom is right here in front of us. And towards the end...the burst of orchestra and voices makes me wonder about where we could take ourselves if we lived our lives knowing our souls are the one thing we've got.
