Say You Love Me by Jessie Ware
I was in the car with Anay this past Sunday driving on 99. It was that gorgeous kind of Sunday where the sun felt hot (a rare feel in Seattle on a typical June day). People had their windows rolled down and everything just moved slower. We were at a stop light and I could hear the music playing from the car next to me. Sam Smith was filling the person's car. It was his falsetto voice seeping through the windows that drew me in. We finally inched up right next to the driver and I rolled my window down saying, "I love Sam Smith's voice."
With a huge smile on his face, this man had nothing but good things to say about Sam Smith. He mentioned that he woke up to him, would sing with him in the shower...I feel like he put his hand to his heart, shaking his head saying...yeah, Sam Smith gets him. Sam Smith fills his soul up. Bless Sam Smith.
It was awesome-seeing this grown man feel music so deeply. Anay and I laughed...fully. He was all vulnerable about how this music filled his soul up. I was like...preach!
I share Jessie Ware's song today, 'Say You Love Me,' thinking about that vulnerability I saw on Sunday. I love the beat and what she's asking of her love. I love the idea of us sharing what we need with those that we love and them being able to do the same. When we can say those words to each other, open up what we're truly feeling-I think that's when we can get to some cool places in our relationships. Vulnerability gets to our depth as human beings.
Surprise surprise that I'm sharing another British soul singer-I have to get my fill in every once in while throughout this blog.
Ware's songs get described as eloquent and assured. Her voice described as sensual and smooth:
"Just say you love me, just for today
And don't give me time' cause that's not the same
Want to feel burning flames when you say my name
Want to feel passion flow into my bones
Like blood through my veins."
I love that she describes herself as happily married and that she still writes these heartfelt songs dissecting love. I just finished this fun book called 'The Lover's Dictionary,' by David Levithan where he used different words throughout the alphabet to describe the nuances of love between a couple...and what happens when two people are and aren't vulnerable with each other.
Here's what I am coming to realize: the more we open up to others about ourselves, the more we are revealing who we truly are, and that's just beautiful ish.
