Fly Before You Fall by Cynthia Erivo
You know the friends who are like sisters to you? The ones that have been with you through some of the most challenging times in life and help build you up? My friend Tasha is exactly that friend. As I reflect over my life, I can't help but feel so incredibly blessed with the beautiful people that have made me stronger, have challenged me and have helped me to get where I am today.
What's incredible is that Tash has also been my creative sister for the last several years. The one that has pushed me in my music, in my writing and on working to be the most authentic version of myself. We both started experimenting with the arts throughout this last decade. She was the one who got me into music festivals and into doing performance art. I think I found my voice because of this woman. And I was able to bridge multiple parts of who I am because of her thoughtfulness. Ultimately, I found how music is a refuge for me in a way I couldn't verbalize before.
So Tash leaves in a couple of weeks to go on this incredible new journey where I know she will fly and inspire us with whatever profound work she ends up doing for the world. Because when you commit your life to service and justice the way she does, this place can only get lifted.
I've also learned about some incredibly moving music because of Tash. Just today, she introduced me to this song' Fly Before You Fall,' by Cynthia Erivo.
In the beginning, the major piano chords frame the song in this uplifting way. And while the first stanza focuses on someone breaking down because of lost love, I think the deeper message for me is the person who holds the other person up in the midst of this challenge and stands by them through it all. When you have those kind of people in life, the ones that help you to fly even when you've fallen, you realize just how significant they are to you becoming that much better in life. Now that's a gift I don't take lightly.
"I hear you
Tumbling fast
Here and now, you're afraid
Don't you worry
I'll teach you to fly before you fall away"
So this post is dedicated to you, Tash. Thank you...for your presence, your compassion, your joy, your authenticity...and for that amazing blue blanket I will miss in Beacon Hill! You teach us how to fly.
Love ya, sister.
