Fire by Jessie J
What has been the fire that has been pushing you lately? What moves you to get up and do something everyday? If I were to poll the people in my life right now about that question, the answers would vary from trying to cure diseases, raising children, preparing for a physical challenge, #blacklivesmatter, aging gracefully, love...
I think about Anay and how he is about to climb Mount Rainier tomorrow. And how this fire is moving him.The apartment is surrounded by climbing gear, layers of clothing, water bottles, and anticipation. I love watching him get in the mind space around a challenge he has to inevitably face. I realize that when I can see the people I love move with purpose and a deep motivation...that's an incredible source of inspiration for me.
I think about the people I work with and how we so deeply want to improve the education system in this country. And how when I just listened to a This American Life episode about segregation in our American schools, my heart beat just a little bit faster.
I read recently how 11 million Syrians have become deplaced. 11 million people who have had to leave their homes. I wonder what kinds of fires push them. And what allows them to keep surviving. I know that whatever they pass on in terms of adaptation to the next generation will make them resilient. Which makes me wonder, when pushed to survive, what do we become capable of?
I think about my day to day life and the things that excite me and make me passionate (love, music, reading, human connection, community, travel, trying to fix broken systems, a quest for a deeper spiritual life). And not everything is equally pushing me at one moment in my life. There are days when community is at the forefront and my passion while there are days that singing for 2 hours makes me feel stronger. It all depends on what is happening externally and at the soul level.
You hear about social capital, human capital and economic capital. How about passion capital...the amount of passion/fire you bring to a conversation and space that elevates all of us?
I took the bus to work today and listened to Jessie J. She has this song, 'Fire.'
"From the fire, fire fire
I never want to put it out
Burning, burning, burning"
Simple, but an anthem that resonates with me lately. I never want to put out whatever fire that is moving me.
Anay, Andri. Katie and Fritz...have an amazing climb. We can't wait to hear what fire helped you to climb 14,000 feet. Sending you all kinds of love from down here. Don't forget to share that incredible magic that kept pushing you, I know that we could all use a mountain metaphor to help us to get to our next steps.
Much love.
