Remember Us by Gabriel Royal
"My mother told me to be careful, don't think with your heart."
This week's love song is by Gabriel Royal! This guy has got one beautiful style. Cello and voice. I'm such a fan of sparseness. Check out his song, "Remember Us." There is such a simplicity, a waltz like feel, but it's so incredibly soulful.
Of course, I am always a sucker for a New York subway backdrop too. I believe he plays at the Metropolitan Avenue Lorimer Street stop in Brooklyn. Gorgeous echoes down there, ay? He's all the way from Tulsa, but NYC finally got his creative jump start.
Anyway, back to the song. The cello brings so much depth and grounds the song. Here he is singing about falling in love, his voice hitting highs and lows, and throughout it all, the strings hold him up. His voice can go anywhere. And where we can tend to overproduce music, here is a song that feels timeless. It doesn't need any decade to pin it down, by musical engineering, it's just a heartfelt song about love.
"I don't remember us falling in love, this sort of thing is old-fashioned."
