She by Laura Mvula

Maybe it's because I'm turning a year older in just a few days, but this song, 'She,' by Laura Mvula really resonates with me today!

Laura Mvula is a British soul-singer from Birmingham. There are many soul singers from Britain that I have loved in these past few years: Emeli Sande, Paloma Faith, Adele, Lianne Le Havas,...they've all brought out something beautiful that doesn't quite get captured in typical pop music over here (a little bit of soul). And yet, Laura Mvula's work sounds different. The orchestras featured in some of the songs, the harmonies, the lyrics.

NPR did a recent report saying, "The very first notes on Laura Mvula's new album feel like a powerful invocation. You're not sure for what, but the moment is awesome — with an emphasis on awe.

They are on point. There are moments when I feel like some of the songs have helped me to transcend. 'She' is one of those songs. I think it's this consistent message to just keep going, no matter what. "Don't Stop.' Throughout the song, the choir sounds like an invocation, a prayer of sorts. I could be interpreting it all for my own purposes, but don't we tend to do that with songs anyway;)

To me, this life is about going beyond ourselves in order to follow something that we have discovered in ourselves so we can bring it out through the lens of love. And even amidst the chaos, the warfare, the hatred...if we can manifest this, then the world gets just a little bit stronger. It's taken me years to come to this conclusion about what life means, but it makes more and more sense to me.

So here's to the mantra and the love behind, 'Don't Stop.' Keep following whatever it is we're all doing to bring about light in this world...because couldn't we all truly use it these days?
