Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth

This year flew by so quickly. And within one year, so many epic things happened at the global and personal level. We have a pope radically changing what we think about equity. A meteor that fell in Russia. A coup d'etat in Egypt. A typhoon sweeping through the Phillipines.

And I know so many of my people who have gone through deeply transformational events...some have found the love of their lives, some lost people who were love in their life, and throughout this all, we've entered into deeper conversations about what this all means.

My friend shared a Ted Talk by Boyd Varty.  He is a South African man working with wildlife and he gave the talk the day Nelson Mandela passed away. At a young age, he had the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela and he talked about this concept from South Africa, Ubuntu, that Mandela seemed to embody so deeply as he worked to transform a nation.

Ubuntu: I am; because of you.

Boyd spoke about how Ubuntu is an opportunity to bring out the deepest truth of who we are...through our interactions with others. It's about opening our hearts and sharing.  Fear doesn't have a place. It can't when you're going to that level.

I found this song by Labrinth, 'Beneath your Beautiful.'  Labrinth and Emeli Sandi sing this duo and it's funny, when I listened to this song, I immediately thought of Ubuntu. This idea of sharing your truest self and opening up, because when we do, there's some beautiful things that can happen:

"Would you let me see beneath your beautiful?
Would you let me see beneath your perfect?
Take it off now, girl, take it off now, girl
'Cause I wanna see inside"

Just a few more weeks before we delve into a new year (western calendar style;) So here's a love song dedicated to Ubuntu. To acknowledging that we might collectively get that much stronger when we learn to speak our truths unabashedly.
