The Luckiest by Ben Folds Five

I just returned from this phenomenal trip to India. Feel blessed for the landscapes, the family, the complexities, the gut feeling of connection, and the ideas that come to me when I get to travel. I got to check out new music videos from the latest Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam movies and that was sooooo fun.

And as my cousin pointed out, sounds were constant. There were some mornings when I would wake up to the crashing sound of some of the most powerful waves I've ever witnessed. And others when music from the local Hindu temple slowly seeped into the house.

Marari Beach, 2014 (that's my hand!)

Now, I'm back! And 2014...wow, it's on a roll, which I love. I'm writing new songs as I'm inspired by new ideas. It's funny how the most random of words, events, or even objects can create a song idea and suddenly it takes on a shape and flavor.

This week, I'm featuring Ben Folds Five...remember Ben Folds Five?! His lyrics, the heavy emphasis on the piano, the honesty in the words. There's something so authentic about the music. I listened to 'Brick' today and I was like, damn!! That's one heartfelt song! And it's probably been 10 years since I've truly listened to it. I read a few interviews this morning with Ben Folds and I also just appreciate a lightness he has as he approaches the world. He can laugh at himself and situations around him.

'The Luckiest,' is what drew me in though. It's this super sentimental love song, so bear with me. I think it's because I've been listening to songs lately for the weddings I'll be attending this year. I like how the piano tells a narrative in itself. Like if you took out the lyrics, the piano would still evoke this really beautiful story. And then there's these words:

"...Next door, there's an old man who lived to his 90's
And one day, passed away in his sleep
And his wife, she stayed for a couple of days
And passed away

I'm sorry, I know that's a strange way
To tell you that I know we belong
That I know that I am
I am, I am the luckiest"
